“IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE” FREE RADIO ADAPTATION DEBUTS

October 13 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Written in 1935 during the rise of fascism in Europe, Sinclair Lewis’ darkly satirical It Can’t Happen Here follows the ascent of a demagogue who becomes president of the United States by promising to return the country to greatness. In 2016, California’s Berkeley Repertory Theater -– whose mission includes provoking civic engagement —  unveiled a new stage adaptation of Lewis’ prescient novel; now, Berkeley Rep reprises that production with the same director, but this time as a radio play in four episodes on YouTube. The production features members of the original cast including David Kelly as the candidate Buzz Windrip, and Academy Award nominee David Strathairn joins the cast as the liberal protagonist Doremus Jessup. The audio drama is being offered free with the intention of encouraging dialogue and motivating citizens to exercise their civic power and vote. It Can’t Happen Here debuts Tuesday, Oct. 13th at 5 PM via YouTube with a live Q & A session following at 7:15 pm. The production will be available on demand through November 8th. Click here for details.
